Olympic Snow Cross & Snowboard Cross Trials

Young Scottish skiers and snowboarders who dream of being an Olympian and competing at World Cup events in the fast and furious Winter Olympic sport of ski and snowboarder cross can kick-start their dreams later this month at Snow Factor Braehead just west of Glasgow.

First introduced at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games, the elimination format of ski cross (aka SX) and boardercross (aka SBX) sees up to six competitors timed as they race head-to-head down a steep course comprised of jumps, huge berms (corners) and drop-offs. With no margin for error and any physical contact resulting in disqualification, falls are frequent and races won by100ths of a second.

Snow Factor, Scotland’s only indoor real snow-sports facility is the only Scottish venue and just one of 4 UK-wide facilities to be selected by British Ski & Snowboard (BSS), Snowsport Scotland and Snowsport England to host the Mitsubishi Motors Ski & Snowboard Cross GBX National Trials.

It is the first time these trials have been staged in the UK.

On Saturday 23 April (and on 16th July), Snow Factor Braehead will host the first of six trials for skiers and snowboarders of all ages who believe they have the skills and aptitude to succeed.  Snow Factor will also host one of only two SX and SBX competitions (10 July).

Success at the 6-month long trials will see a number of skiers and snowboarders invited by the British National GBX performance / coaching staff to join the 2016/2017 home nations squad, the National Academy squad, the British national squad or the Para-Snowsport GB SBX squad.

Andrew Binnie, Slope Manager at Snow Factor Braehead, commented: “Snow Factor is proud to be one of only four hand-picked, UK-wide venues to host the British GBX trials.  Scotland has many talented young skiers and snowboarders. Those with a desire to compete at the highest level now have a great opportunity to stake their claim for a place in a national or academy squad by showcasing their skills at Snow Factor later this month and at the SX / SBX race day on 10 July.  The on-slope action promises to be fast and furious with everyone keen to impress.”

Pam Thorburn from Glasgow and 2015 British Ski Cross Champion is Scotland’s top ski cross competitor.  Zoe Gillings (Isle of Man) and Britain’s top snow cross competitor has competed at three Winter Olympic Games.
