A 29 year-old from Busby will swap his running shoes for ski boots next Monday (9 May) when he undertakes the latest of his daily 5km x 50 day challenges in aid of the charity Chest Heart & Stroke.

David Fraser, a sports development officer with East Renfrewshire Council is heading indoors to Snow Factor Braehead, Scotland’s only indoor real snow-sports destination with the target of descending the main snow slope at least 30 times in order to achieve his daily 5km challenge.

As David explained: “I’ve always been into sport and fitness. The inspiration for undertaking my own 5k x 50 day challenge in aid of charity came from my boss who was completing his own 5k x 50.  So, ten years after my grandfather died from a heart attack, I decided to set my own challenge.  Aside from keeping fit and motivated by a daily 5km work-out, I also wanted to raise money for Chest Heart & Stroke, a charity that aims to help improve the quality of life for people in Scotland affected by chest, heart and stroke illnesses.”

David, who plays basketball for St Mirren Buddies, only learnt to ski several months ago while on a ski holiday with his girlfriend in Andorra.  He’s since got the ski bug and enjoys the occasional visit to Snow Factor to practice on the windless, snow covered pistes.

David added: “Making descents of the slopes at Snow Factor will be fun and a great way other than cycling, running or swimming to complete my daily 5km challenge. I’m really looking forward to it.  Who knows, based on the recent weather forecasts I may also be doing a 5km ski to work!”

Since starting his challenge on Sunday 27 March, he has already raised over £435 of his £500 fundraising target and if all goes to plan, will complete his 5km x 50 day challenge on Sunday 15 May. As part of his charity bid, David has already run circuits of the track at Scotstoun while watched by Glasgow Warriors rugby players and finished a run at the stadium of Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC.
